Heron's Hideaway at Lake Sinclair

Serene Kayak Adventures on Georgia's Lake Sinclair

There is nothing like a serene morning paddle on Georgia’s Lake Sinclair. The fish are jumping, the birds are singing, and the lake is still and quiet. It’s truly magical.

Relaxing on the lake is how I prefer to spend my time at Heron’s Hideaway, and I try to head out for an early morning paddle on either our 8’ sit-on kayak or BOTE stand-up paddleboard at least once when we visit. (The property is outfitted with life jackets too.)

Exploring the Shores of Lake Sinclair

Generally speaking, the shores of Lake Sinclair are lined with homes, but there are a few public spots to land if you want to explore the lake on a kayak. Here are a few favorite highlights from our shore:

Quaint Beach Spot: About 1,000 feet south of our dock is county-owned land with a lovely walk-in beach. It is not big but it’s enough to pull in and relax on the sand without other visitors. I’m serious, this little sandy nugget is hardly visited by paddlers, boaters, or jet skiers, unlike the other beachy spot we’ll talk about.

The Big Island Adventure: For the adventurous paddler, there is a large island about 1.5 miles from our dock. This island is on much bigger water, and depending on the day of the week and time of day, there can be a lot of watercraft whizzing around. I’ve found that everyone on the lake is responsible, so I’m not saying paddling to this island is dangerous, but you can experience lots of waves. This is why I opt for early morning trips 😊 This island is fun to explore, so bring your shoes if you want to do a little hiking. This area is also great to swim off the beach as the water is deeper all around the island.

Paddling Towards Big Cedar Creek: Going the other direction from our dock, the lake gets shallower as it meets Big Cedar Creek at the top. There is a lot less boat traffic on this finger of the lake, and it’s great to paddle this direction to enjoy the lush surroundings. Since the waters are calmer, the paddle is technically challenging, but it is a much longer ride to the pinnacle where there is NATIVE shoreline. 🐟🐢🐸🦆🦅🌲🌲🌲

Kayaking Excursions Off Lake Sinclair

For kayaking excursions off the lake, there are three popular routes that offer a leisurely paddle down the Oconee River south of the dam. There are a few outfitters in Milledgeville that specialize in tours.

Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a beginner, kayaking our little slice of Georgia’s Lake Sinclair offers a serene and adventurous experience.
